Ebony is my best friend

She is dark matter

- closer to me than the

space that borders my skin,

knows my touch more intimately

than any lover I’ve met

She cloaks my body -

steps in pace behind me.

Tuned into my being with such

finesse that she cannot be seen -

she is more than a twin, clone,

doppelgänger, more than

me and not me at all

Ebony curls her fingers -

weaves mine with her own

and doesn’t let go. I can hardly

sense her as she slips into my

shoes and wears my clothes -

she smiles my smile pulling my

curls and snips them off one by one

There is no me and she

when there is Ebony -

No sense of my own-ness when

she postures and imposters

parading her contentedness inside me.

We are not night and day but the

shade of grey that silvers

in the moonlight
